The primary goal of the project was to allow research institutions and companies to buy materials and products but be subject to Polyera's approval. However, credit card info needed to be taken at the time of the purchase and not processed until the order was approved. This violates one of the major tenets of PCI compliance: you cannot store customer data like credit cards for any length of time. We found a loophole by integrating Virtuemart with Authorize.net's own CIM server, which allowed us to store customer information off-site in a secure server and access it at the time of order approval, thus maintaining PCI compliance.
